A couple of years ago these spots for Toyota got me interested in 3D motion design - at the time I had no concept of how this was done (mixing footage with 3D composited elements) but looking at it now it is clear how it was created. Using filmed footage and simple geometric models for the shapes to bounce and react to and some clever masking and shadow casting.
There is no reason (other than visual continuity) that this particular spot couldn't have used a photograph rather than footage. In the others there is secondary motion in the scenes with the use of people to increase the belief that the objects occupy a real space whereas this one the background is entirely stationary...
